Women’s Skateboard Park

Nine of the 16 X Games Ventura SONIC Women’s Skateboard Park athletes are headed to the Paris 2024 Olympics. While all three Ventura medalists also will compete in the Olympics, the attention at X Games was on Arisa Trew, and she put on a tour de force performance.

Trew only landed one run in Women’s Park, but it was the only run she needed. The 14-year-old Aussie -- who had qualified in first -- scored an 87.33 on her second run. Not only was that good enough for gold, it was 8.66 points better than silver medalist Hinano Kusaki. That’s a mammoth margin in a discipline where only 7.33 points separated Kusaki from the 7th place finisher. Another young Australian, Ruby Trew (no relation to her friend Arisa), earned bronze. Both Kusaki and Ruby Trew collected their first X Games medals and will make their Olympic debuts in Paris.

It’s Arisa Trew’s second straight X Games gold in the discipline. She also successfully defended her X Games California 2023 Women’s Vert title at Ventura and now owns four total X Games gold: She’s the first athlete in X Games history with four gold by age 14.

Trew won the final two Olympic qualifier series contests. She finished second in the overall Olympic qualifying race to Cocona Hiraki but will be hard to beat in Paris. Hiraki -- who has Olympic silver from the Tokyo Games -- qualified for the X Games Ventura final but couldn’t land a clean run. It may not have mattered; Trew might be too good at the moment.

Here’s how the rest of the Paris 2024 Women’s Park Olympians fared at X Games Ventura:

  • Lilly Stoephasius (GER), 4th
  • Cocona Hiraki (JPN), 8th
  • Minna Stess (USA), 9th
  • Bryce Wettstein (USA), 10th
  • Raicca Ventura (BRA), 11th
  • Ruby Lilley (USA), 15th

Men’s Skateboard Street

Nine of the 16 X Games Ventura Monster Energy Men’s Skateboard Street athletes are headed to the Paris 2024 Olympics. The headliner? Nyjah Huston, of course. Huston won the Monster Energy Men’s Skateboard Street Best Trick contest on Saturday at Ventura. That was Nyjah’s 14th X Games gold medal overall, and he entered Sunday’s Street final with a chance to tie Shaun White and Jamie Bestwick for the most gold in X Games history.

But it wouldn’t be easy; the field was stacked. And it started inauspiciously when Nyjah missed his first two tricks in Run 1. He put that behind him and crushed his second pass, notching a 92.33. That would’ve been good enough for gold…except he bettered the mark in Run 3, storming to a 95.00 and winning by a dominant 4.33 points. American Braden Hoban took an impressive silver, continuing his street scene ascension. Hoban narrowly missed qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and his Olympic peers are probably pretty pleased they won’t have to face the San Diego native, who just turned 23 on July 20th.

Gustavo Ribeiro claimed X Games Ventura bronze and Brazil’s Kelvin Hoefler was just behind in 4th. Both men are Paris-bound. Ribeiro became the first person from Portugal ever to medal at X Games -- Portugal is the 43rd country to be represented on an X Games podium. Hoefler narrowly missed out on his 8th X Games medal, but the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist will enter Paris 2024 with confidence.

Huston has made heaps of history since debuting at X Games at age 11 in 2006, but matching White and Reynolds for the most-ever X Games gold might top the list. Until the next one: Nyjah made it clear in Ventura that there’s more to come. But before X Games Chiba in September, he’ll travel to Paris looking to improve upon his 7th place at the Tokyo Olympics.

Here’s how the rest of the Paris 2024 Men’s Street Olympians fared at X Games Ventura:

  • Giovanni Vianna (BRA), 6th
  • Jhancarlos Gonzalez (COL), 7th
  • Matt Berger (CAN), 12th
  • Ryan Decenzo (CAN), 14th
  • Chris Joslin (USA), 15th
  • Felipe Gustavo (BRA), 16th

Gonzalez made an impression in Ventura: Not only did he make the Street final in a very talented field, he earned bronze in Saturday’s Skateboard Street Best Trick. That medal made him the first athlete from Colombia with an X Games podium.

Women's Skateboard Street

Of the six disciplines that X Games Ventura and the Paris 2024 Olympics share, five of the X Games contests were won by athletes going on to compete in Paris. The lone exception? Monster Energy Women’s Skateboard Street, where Japan’s Miyu Ito posted the two highest scores to take gold.

But missing the Olympics is no knock on Ito; she’s the victim of a numbers crunch: Japan has -- by far -- the deepest pool of women’s street skaters in the world. In fact, there’s so much talent in the country that the defending Olympic gold medalist in women’s street, Momiji Nishiya, didn’t make Japan’s team for the Paris Games.

And how about this: five of the 15 skaters in the X Games Ventura Women’s Street Elimination round represented Japan…and they finished 1st through 5th in the Elim! Wow. Incredibly, only one of those five, Liz Akama, is going to the Olympics. X Games Ventura Street bronze medalist and fellow Japanese Yumeka Oda won’t be in Paris, either, though Oda did add XG Ventura Street Best Trick gold. Like we said, Japan is deep.

A 17-year-old X Games rookie, Ito surprised in Ventura. But it was the Street silver medalist, Akama, who will be a threat for the Paris Olympics title. Here’s how the 2024 Women’s Street Olympians fared at X Games Ventura:

  • Liz Akama (JPN), silver
  • Paige Heyn (USA), 5th
  • Mariah Duran (USA), 10th
  • Jazmin Alvarez (COL), 13th

Sixteen-year-old Paige Heyn was the only American to make the X Games Ventura Women’s Street final, where she placed a solid 5th. The switch-skating savant would do well to repeat the feat at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

BMX at the Olympics

The BMX Park fields are smaller than the Skateboard Street and Park rosters at both X Games Ventura and the Paris 2024 Olympics. X Games featured 10 riders, while the Olympics will have 12 (as opposed to 22 in each of the Olympic skate disciplines). Also note that the Paris 2024 course will look entirely different from the one at X Games: the Olympics uses a traditional box jump/spine/quarterpipe-heavy setup, while the X Games moved to a more flowing, stylish bowl/pool course about 15 years ago.

All four Americans who qualified for BMX disciplines at the Paris 2024 Olympics competed at X Games Ventura: Hannah Roberts, Perris Benegas, Marcus Christopher and Justin Dowell. Roberts and Christopher both rode to convincing X Games victories, while Benegas took silver.

Women’s BMX Park

Six of the 10 X Games Ventura SONIC Women’s BMX Park athletes are headed to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Probably not coincidentally, they finished 1st through 6th in Ventura, with the Tokyo Olympics silver medalist, Hannah Roberts, taking gold in the discipline’s medal debut at X Games.

A 22-year-old American, Roberts was as-advertised at X Games: She entered as the favorite and then logged the two best scores of the contest, including a 90.00 in Run 1 which was a full 5 points better than silver medalist Perris Benegas. The 5-point gap between Roberts and her fellow American was larger than the gap between Benegas in 2nd and Australia’s Natalya Diehm in 6th.

Germany’s Kim Mueller took bronze ahead of Chile’s Macarena Perez and Nikita Ducarroz, the bronze medalist from the Tokyo Olympics. Six countries were represented among the 10 X Games Ventura Women’s Park athletes, proving that the discipline quickly has grown worldwide. Roberts will be a favorite at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and Benegas has a shot at a medal after placing 4th at the Tokyo Games.

Here’s how the Paris 2024 Women’s BMX Park Olympians fared at X Games Ventura:

  • Hannah Roberts (USA), gold
  • Perris Benegas (USA), silver
  • Kim Mueller (GER), bronze
  • Macarena Pérez (CHI), 4th
  • Nikita Ducarroz (SUI), 5th
  • Natalya Diehm (AUS), 6th

Men's BMX Park

Marcus Christopher entered X Games Ventura Presented by SONIC on a mission. The American, who debuted at X Games as a 16-year-old at Minneapolis 2019, had broken through with BMX Park bronze at X Games Japan 2023. But then his body was broken just two months later at X Games California. Christopher took a horrific slam on his first run in 2023, crashing straight to face. He broke his jaw and cheekbone, needed multiple plates and screws and spent weeks sucking through a straw.

But the barrel-chested Ohio rider proved he’s not just burly in appearance; he’s strong mentally, too. Still just 21 and the second-youngest rider in the field, Marcus returned to X Games at Ventura 2024 and dominated a talented roster for his first X Games gold. Christopher tallied a 94 in Run 1, which seemed untouchable. But what did he do in Run 2? Charged even harder, scoring a 95.66 and basically shutting down the contest with half of it remaining. Everyone else was fighting for silver. He won by nearly 5 full points and his Run 1 score would’ve been good for gold, too.

Argentina’s Jose Torres took X Games bronze, his third medal (including gold at XG California 2023). Justin Dowell couldn’t land a clean run, placing 7th. Dowell and Torres both will be medal hopefuls at the Paris 2024 Olympics, while Christopher will be a favorite. Taking X Games gold after an excellent 2nd place at the final Olympic qualifier in Budapest shows that he’s maturing quickly, with the ability to adjust to very different courses and the mental fortitude to overcome harsh crashes.

A quick shoutout, too, to Brazilian Gustavo Oliveira. The 21-year-old ball of energy will join Christopher, Dowell and Torres on the Paris 2024 BMX Park roster. Gustavo didn’t make the X Games Park field but still traveled to Ventura to take part in BMX Dirt. Watch for him in the future.
